Nike says ‘Just Do It,’ Apple encourages people to ‘Think Different’ and Adidas told us that “Impossible is nothing.” I have always been interested in the ability of powerful company mottos to represent the fundamental beliefs of the organization they are connected to and even help shape the behavior of employees.
Twenty years ago, when we founded Heritage Financial Consultants, it was important to me to create a company motto that would immediately communicate our core values, dictate our company culture and become a part of the way we work and plan for the future.
In big letters on our office wall I wrote… “Work Hard. Play Hard. Make a Difference.”
It was those last three words, ‘make a difference’, that meant the most to me. Creating a philanthropic focused company was something I viewed as essential and my team and I have made Heritage Financial Consultants a company that cares deeply about the communities in which we work and serve.
I’ve always known that I was not meant to stand on the sidelines of difficulty or misfortunate when I had the means to step in and help. I’m not talking about strictly monetary contributions either, we make it a priority to ensure that our advisors are out in their communities volunteering, participating in events and taking action.
In our industry, ‘work hard, play hard’ seems to come easy, but improving the quality of life for people in your community takes a more concentrated effort. I am proud to say that for the past twenty years our motto has been passionately adopted by all those who call Heritage home.
